Copy Cat McDonald's Signature Sandwich Sriracha Chicken Sandwich
McDonald's has been notoriously bad for promoting horrible eating habits but they finally got something almost right. Using the Thai ingredient that has been trending the last decade they seem to be catching on. Their sandwiches are lacking with their refined flour buns and fried onions but their grilled chicken is amazing. I know it is not a recipe from Thailand, but the hot, trending ingredient gives me a little license to go with it.
I started from scratch and tried to reproduce what they do. One to the things they are doing that is responsible is using antibiotic free chicken breast. The reason this is good is because it prevents the acceleration of antibiotic resistant microbes. When you expose massive amounts of bacteria to antibiotics the chances of a genetic mutation making one resistant taking off goes way up. I wrote a whole article on it here.
Other Ingredients
I have bought the Sriracha sandwich several times since it came out last month. A few times I got different kinds of greens. Once they put spinach on it, once they put something else. I don't know but I am guessing it is supposed to be standardized and they are getting away with improvising occasionally. One of the good things about doing it yourself is controlling the quality. I also wondered if that sandwich was safe but I was famished and just ate it really fast. I used a leafy green lettuce here. I also used a thin sliced chicken breast. The regular thickness ones were harder to cook just right and were too thick. We tried it.
There is a white cheese, I used Swiss and got some of the french fried onions. I also replaced their artisan bun with a whole wheat bun. Supermarkets are also doing a little better at having healthier options. I have yet to find a supermarket that doesn't have whole wheat buns. For the Sriracha, theirs looks more like a Sriracha mayo but actually tasted better to me. I wasn't able to reproduce this one exactly but I have my own Sriracha mayo recipe you can use. To get closer to their flavor I would decrease the amount of mayo used and increase the Sriracha. I think they decreased the spiciness of the Sriracha to give it more broad appeal. Below is my post for a healthier Sriracha Mayo.
Grilling
I asked them how they grill the sandwich at McDonald's and the guy said, "Just on a skillet with butter" lol. I don't know if he spoke proper English but I grilled mine on an actual grill with fire. We also did it with the skillet and that was good too. I often try recipes a few ways to see which I like the best. As a guy I think I just like grilling on an actual grill. I put the cheese on it when I grilled it and I think the neighbors were eyeing it. 🙂 You can also brush the buns with some kind of healthy oil or butter and warm them for a second. That is the thing I like about the artisan bun, I think they do something like that to it.
