Copycat Starbucks Chili Mocha Thai Style

Copycat Starbucks Chili Mocha Thai Style

This is a recipe for a chili mocha drink using Thai chili powder rather than the traditional ones.  It is super spicy if you want it to be so proceed with caution.  🙂  This is a recipe inspired from my beloved company Starbucks.  It is a long way from being an exact copy but more of an inspired by recipe.  I describe the differences a bit more below.

    Background

Our last Starbucks copycat recipe did so well I had to do another one.  If this one does well also you can expect more to come.  I am a Starbucks addict and I love their chili mocha drinks.  Our budget includes $100 approximately for my caffeine fix so figuring out how to do some of these drinks at home is a score for us.

My first question was, "What is mocha?".  We've all heard it a thousand times and at least for me I just accepted that it was fancier than regular coffee.  The people at my local Starbucks were nice enough to show me how they just add a bit of their mocha powder and a little of their chili powder to a regular coffee.

Allrecipes has one recipe that is just a little coffee, a little cocoa powder and a little sugar.  That's really all it is.  If you want to know the exact type of powders used by Starbucks my friend Stephanie Manly at copykat.com has done a good job figuring out the ingredients starbucks uses for their mochas.  They are using Medaglia D'Oro Instant Espresso mix and Fontana(TM) semi-sweet chocolate mocha sauce.  I highly recommend following her site if you dig copycat recipes.  She is a true pro.

    Our Recipe

For our recipe I used a chocolate protein powder which tastes a lot like cocoa to me and did the job nicely in the end product.  I also used a Thai chili powder my wife makes for the chili powder.  Rather than sugar or syrup we use stevia as usual.   Garnish with a fresh Thai chili and please be careful with the little firecrackers!  🙂

    Ingredients:

    • 1 Heaping scoop of a chocolate protein powder, or as I stated before you can just use 1 teaspoon cocoa powder if that's what you have.
    • ¼ teaspoon of my wife's Homemade Thai Chili Powder
    • 1 teaspoon of stevia
    • 1 stout cup of hot instant coffee

    Directions:

    1. Make a large hot cup of coffee using the directions on the package
    2. Add the other ingredients and shake or blend
    3. Taste and add some kind of milk if it is too spicy or add chili powder if it's not spicy enough
    4. Garnish with a fresh Thai chili pepper if you have one
