    These smoothies are becoming increasingly popular around the world and the US.  You can find them all over the major cities of Thailand at tea and smoothie vendors.  Smoothies are a great way to sneak some high quality protein into your diet as a pre or post workout supplement.   Save A LOT of money by preparing this yourself.

    Jackfruit- What is it and how to eat it

    If you are wondering what it is, prepare to be impressed.  B)  The mammoth fruit that grows on a large tree in Southeast Asia and now also other tropical parts of the world.  It grows off the trunk of tree which was also weird for me to see.   Kind of reminds me of skin tags growing off of someone's neck.  I would never pluck a skin tag off a neck and pop it in my mouth though.  he he he. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Check it out and how to open it in this video we made.  The very process of opening it can be a party in itself.  You can actually buy a whole jackfruit on Amazon now.  You can also buy it in a can though if you don't have access.

     

    This jackfruit smoothie is an easy way to enjoy the health benefits of jackfruit with protein for your muscles.

    Calculating How Much Protein to Add

    When I took nutrition for sport and fitness as part of my bachelors degree the formula was 1.4-1.8 grams of protein/ kilogram of body weight.  You will have to have some protein powder, whey is the most absorb-able by the body.   Quickly convert pounds to kilograms at this site to calculate how much you weigh in kilograms.  Remember that that is the amount of protein per day.  This means you have to account for the protein you have or will be consuming the rest of the day.

    Adding a Juice

    Adding a juice makes the flavor more interesting.  You can create flavors that have never existed before.   One thing you have to watch though is all the simple carbohydrates you are adding when you choose a juice.  Aloe juice can be a good way to add some subtle sweetness to any smoothie and also provide a little texture.  The jackfruit already adds a nice, smooth texture but the aloe added a nice touch.  Look for the one in the market that is sugar free, low calorie or low in sugar.  We went to the Kroger, an American supermarket chain,  last night and they had it.

    Other supplements

    Personally, I like creatine and glycomaize.  I underlined and bolded personally for a reason.  With supplements you always have to be concerned about side effects.  If you have serious health concerns you may want to check with your doctor first.  Creatine adds ingredients you need for short burst energy.  Glycomaize adds simple and complex carbs or more sustained release energy.  A lot of the other things they sell at nutrition stores are pretty gimmicky as far as I know.  You could add a multi-vitamin I suppose though I never have.  As always, please comment and let us know how you would improve this recipe!  Also make sure to follow us on Facebook and our other social media where we are healthythairecipes.  🙂 🙂

    My Recipe

    Ingredients:

    • Protein powder with a neutral flavor in the amount calculated based on your weight.   Go for a the higher end of the spectrum if you are a heavy lifter.
    • 1-2 cups of peeled jackfruit depending on how thick you like it 1 used a cup and a half.
    • 1 ½ cup aloe juice or whatever juice you prefer.
    • Any other supplements you choose.
    • 1 cup ice

    Instructions:

    1. Simply combine all the ingredients and blend until smooth.
    2. Garnish with a piece of jackfruit to impress.
