Starfruit Lime Protein Energy Smoothie
Starfruit is a very common fruit in Thailand that has a light crisp mild sweetness and high water content. The flesh is similar to the inside of a grape and tastes great chilled. This recipe combines the subtle sweetness of the starfruit with the similar but stronger taste of lime. I use protein and carbohydrate powders with some ice to create a smooth cool consistency. This easy smoothie recipe is a new foodie adventure for us that didn't grow up with it. It reinvigorates what can otherwise be a monotonous routine of taking protein powders daily.
In Texas you can buy starfruit at a lot of the bigger American grocery stores and at a lot of the Asian markets. I bought ours at the local Kroger, which is a large chain in Texas. Technology is making the world a smaller place and now you can also buy it fresh here on Amazon.com. Unlike in Thailand they are quite pricey if you buy them on Amazon, try the store first. They are so common in Thailand my wife said her dad used to have to make it sound fancy to get her to eat it. They rot on the ground all over the country they are so abundant.
How I came up with my starfruit protein recipe
First I tried 1 and a half starfruit and my typical supplements, protein, glycomaize and creatine monohydrate. The subtle flavor of the starfruit was largely washed out by the powders even though they are supposed to be unflavored. I added lime juice and stevia to magnify the flavor of the starfruit because the combination has a similar flavor yet a bit stronger.
I like to add a complex whey protein rather than an isolate after learning that it is more effective. I like whey protein because everything I have read says whey absorbs better. I used Optima multi purpose mix. It is unflavored and you can put it in a lot of different recipes without changing the flavor as much as flavored powders do. It's a good way to put a bit of protein in a favorite food that doesn't feel as nursing home as drinking an Ensure.
I also added a complex carbohydrate mix and creatine monohydrate which recharges your CP energy system. As my readers have mentioned before, you want to always use supplements with caution. Personally, I am not too worried about the ones I use. I probably don't use them as much as I should to really get the benefits. Each person's situation is fact dependent depending on what conditions you have. When in doubt, check it out with an appropriate health care professional. Here is a Web MD article on uses, how it works and possible side effects.
