Coconut Mango Protein Smoothie
Coconuts and Mangoes are built into the fabric of Thailand so I decided to make a Coconut Mango Protein Smoothie. Everywhere you go they are ubiquitous. They are in the trees, on the ground, in peoples homes, and on the temple alters. People travel across the globe to sit back and have a coconut cocktail on the beach under their beautiful tropical trees. This coconut mango protein smoothie recipe lets you have a little tropical vacation anywhere in the world with zero guilt.
The recipe is pretty straight forward but there are a few important points you need to know to make it healthy.
- You need to peel the skin of the mangoes because they have a chemical compound called urushiol. Urushiol is the same compound found in poison ivy and poison oak according to chemistry.about.com. If you are reactive to the chemical it could mean big trouble if you ingest some of it. Some people eat it and I made one version with the skins but after feeling what might have been a little skin tingling I chickened out.2. Using a lower fat coconut milk is probably a good idea because coconut milk is very high in saturated fat. I used a coconut milk you buy in a carton from the soy milk area of the store. It is more drinkable to me as is than the canned type.3. I put creatine monohydrate in my recipe and it can have side effects. It may also be contraindicated for people with certain conditions. When in doubt check it out with your doctor. I like the supplement because the FDA found that there is enough evidence to support the claim that it recharges your CP energy system. In layman's terms that means it gives you more energy. You can read more here
4. The recommended protein intake for some working out with weights/resistance training is 1.4-1.8 grams per kilogram of body-weight. You will want to adjust accordingly and if you aren't working out maybe go 1 gram per kilogram.
