Thai Turkey Dogs and Chopped Thai Chicken Salad
Turkey dogs are a great summer grilling tradition in our family. We like to make them more interesting ergo the Thai turkey dog was born. Adding a Thai style chopped cabbage and papaya salad does the trick. The light and zesty Thai salad is delicious on it's own as well. We also grilled some chicken tenders as an option to eat the salad as it's own dish.
Background of the Thai turkey dog
As the world becomes more interconnected there are certain natural pairings that happen. Grilling hot dogs is very American and a chopped salad composed of zesty cool ingredients is very Thai. Both are great in hot weather and as it turns out they taste good together. I love doing fusion recipes because I feel like some kind of pioneer. Maybe a super amateur inventor but an inventor of a new way to do something non the less.
We found a couple of recipes online that inspired us. Pinch of yum with her wild success came up with an Asian salad that looked good. This other guy came up with a Thai slaw that looked good. I didn't really copy either of them as much as use some of their ideas for my own. My idea is that you create the slaw, grill dogs and chicken tenders and have several choices.
Here is my recipe
Ingredients:
Grilled Meats
- 1 8 pack of large turkey dogs
- 1 pound of chicken tenders
Salad
- 2 ½ cups of slaw mix minus the dressing. (chopped carrots and cabbage in equal parts basically if your market doesn't have the pre-made kind)
- 1 ½ cup shredded green papaya
- ½ cup chopped green onions
- ½ cup crushed peanuts- You can put peanuts in a Ziploc back and crush them with a bowl
- ½ cup cilantro
- 1 bottle light Asian salad dressing. Here's a recipe for our dressing below.

Instructions:
- Mix all the salad ingredients and toss
- Grill the meat as desired
- Serve the salad and meats separately with the option to put the salad on the dogs to make the Thai turkey dog. Or you can add the chicken to the salad and eat as a salad. You can use a fork to add pull the chicken into small pieces. Or you can do both like we did. 🙂
- Enjoy!!!!
